Simple investor education, right here. Topics inspired by AMFI's Mutual Funds Sahi Hai investor awareness initiative, explained in our own words.
What is a mutual fund?
A mutual fund pools money from many investors and a professional fund manager invests it in assets such as shares and bonds. You receive units, and their value (NAV) moves with the market value of the fund's holdings.
How does a SIP work?
A SIP invests a fixed amount at regular intervals. You buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they are high, which builds discipline and averages your cost. It does not guarantee profit or protect against loss.
Low risk vs high risk investments
Higher potential returns usually come with a higher chance of loss. The right mix depends on your goals, time horizon and how comfortable you are with falls in value.
What happens if you delay investing?
Compounding needs time. Starting later usually means investing more each month to reach the same goal, so even a small start today helps.
What is the role of a distributor?
A distributor helps you understand products, complete paperwork and stay disciplined. Always ask how your distributor is paid, and read the scheme documents yourself.
Why not worry about volatility?
Short-term ups and downs are normal in market-linked investments. Long-term investors tend to do better by staying with their plan, though losses can still occur.
SIP vs lump sum
SIPs suit regular income and spread your entry over time. A lump sum suits surplus money but carries timing risk. Your goal and temperament should decide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for first-time investors, families, business owners and retirees.
I am in my 20s with a modest salary. Can I really start investing?
Yes. Many mutual funds allow SIPs from a few hundred rupees a month, and starting early gives compounding more time to work. The minimum depends on the scheme.
I am in my 40s with children's education and retirement both coming. Is it too late?
It is not too late, but the plan needs to be more deliberate. We help you split your goals by timeline and choose suitable products for each one.
I am retired or close to retirement. Can I get regular income?
A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) lets you withdraw a fixed amount at regular intervals. Returns and income are not guaranteed, so we discuss risk and withdrawal rate before you decide.
Which is better, SIP or lump sum?
Neither is better for everyone. A SIP suits regular income and spreads your entry across market levels, while a lump sum may suit surplus money, with the timing risk that comes with it.
What if the market falls right after I invest?
Market ups and downs are normal and losses are possible, especially in the short term. Match your investment to your time horizon, and avoid reacting to short-term news.
I can use apps, YouTube and AI tools. Why do I need a distributor?
You can invest on your own. A distributor adds personal guidance, help with paperwork and a steady voice when markets are noisy. The choice is always yours.
Do I pay extra to invest through you?
Regular plans include a distributor commission within the fund's expense ratio, while direct plans are available from fund houses at lower cost. We disclose commissions on request.
What is the difference between a distributor and an investment advisor?
A distributor helps you understand, buy and service products and earns commission from product providers. A registered investment adviser gives personalised advice for a fee. LAB INVESTMENTS acts as a distributor.
Is my money safe? Who do I pay?
Pay only to the official accounts of the fund house or product provider shown on official documents. Never transfer money to a personal account, ours included. Market-linked products still carry risk.
What do I need to get started?
Usually your PAN, Aadhaar, a bank account and a mobile number for one-time KYC. Please do not send these through the website form.
How do I withdraw my money, and how long does it take?
You place a redemption request, and the amount is credited to your bank account, typically within a few working days depending on the fund type. Exit loads and taxes may apply.
What happens if I stop my SIP?
You can usually pause or stop a SIP without a penalty, and the units already bought stay invested. Check the scheme terms, and talk to us before stopping during a market fall.
How much should I invest every month?
It depends on your income, expenses and goals. A common approach is to build an emergency fund and get adequate insurance first, then invest the rest. Try our calculators or talk to us.
How are mutual fund gains taxed?
Tax depends on the type of fund and how long you hold it, and the rules change from time to time. Please consult a qualified tax professional for your situation.
Who can invest in PMS, AIF or SIF?
These have regulatory eligibility rules and high minimum investments (PMS ₹50 lakh, AIF ₹1 crore, SIF ₹10 lakh). We share information and explain risks. Contact us to learn more.
Do you guarantee returns?
No. Market-linked investments carry risk and returns are never guaranteed. Please read all scheme-related documents carefully.
